Our Comments...
This is a newly published version of Knizia's Flinke Pinke/Quandary.
Here's a mini-review by Mike. This originally appeared in the Newsletter on June 8, 2003.
This is the new Reiner Knizia game published by Fantasy Flight Games.
It's billed as the game you can learn in 30 seconds and that's not far
off. Anyone in the hobby long enough will recognize this as a new
version of Knizia's Flinke Pinke or Quandary, as it was titled here in
the US. Quandary sold for $35 retail when it came out. If that was too
high priced or if you missed the printing of that game, you'll be glad
to know Loco sells for less than $10. But it's no less fun in my
opinion.
I took Loco to the coffee shop last night to try it out. The rules are
so extremely simple: Play a card (they range from 0 to 5 in 5 colors),
then pick up a chip (there's 5 of each color). When the 6th card of a
color is played, the round ends. The last card played in each color
indicates the value of those chips. Loco adds one other rule-if you
play a Loco card (a value of 0), you have to say Loco before the card
hits the table. It's one of those Uno-like rules, but it is quite
functional. It's vital to be alerted when one of the colors just became
worthless.
Loco has a nice effect on players, particularly those who like games but
don't see many of the clever things coming from the Euro-games. It can
be tense and even downright aggravating. Imagine having to play a card
that lowers your points just because the round went a turn longer than
you expected!
I highly recommend Loco to anyone who likes fast, simple games that will
appeal to a wide range of gamers. A round can take less than 10
minutes. You can stop there or keep playing until each player starts a
round. Either way, you're looking at a great filler that almost anyone
will enjoy.
