From the Publisher...

Humanity has been at each other's throats since time immemorial. Now, in another galaxy, humans wage war amongst themselves again, but this time, with the aid of alien technology found on other planets.

Ascending Empires offers a nice mixture of building, exploring, and development, along with combat via a simple dexterity element. Players flick their starships into orbits around planets to defend or attack them or surround enemy ships to destroy them.

Ascending Empires is sure to sate the desire for a space empire building game that plays simply yet deeply.

NOTE: I will be up front about this. We tried several ways to do this and found the puzzle board method to work best. However, if you keep the game or leave the game out a long while in a humid environment, the boards might warp. If they do, they could inhibit the dexterity portion of the game (affecting startship movement). The simple solution is to hold down any edges that are raised in order to allow a startship disc to glide smoothly across the map.

Contents: 9 piece puzzle board, 4 player placards, 32 wooden starship discs, 4 wooden battleship discs, 28 wooden planet discs, 10 wooden asteroid discs, 2 sticker sheets, 56 plastic troops, 64 wooden pieces (research facilities, cities, and colonies), 50 VP tokens, 4 range ruler tiles, tech track tokens, rules.

Take the "flicking" mechanic found in Crokinole or Tumblin' Dice, mix it with a dose of civilization building and you get this very unique game! One of the best things about this game is how fast the turns progress once everyone has a handle on the basic rules. You are never sitting around waiting for someone else to rack their brain about their turn. What makes this game so fun is that you travel in your space ships by flicking them, so there is a high sense of tension for the particularly difficult or delicate shots. Coupled with the interesting abilities that you can research that will drastically change the way you choose to play, this game is a definite winner in my book!

This is currently my favorite game. It is the game that Risk wished it could be. The players maneuver around the galaxy, discovering new planets, harvesting resources and developing technology to advance, defend and even conquer other civilizations. The game is fun, especially if you like flicking things around. While some may not like the military aspects of the game, I think it is wonderful. The only thing I don't like about this game is its name. Everything else is great.

Brilliant game of space conquest and exploration mixed with....flicking?!?! Don't worry, those of you like me who are insanely clumsy, the flicking isn't all that's going on here. This is a really fun, unique game for 4 that plays in 90 minutes.

Alex
Decent game with a unique mechanic. I enjoyed.
