Chicago Express   (View Game)

Fun and fast. Chicago Express appears to be simple and straightforward, but actually has some strategic depth to it. Great components add to the enjoyment and any strategy game that can be completed in less than an hour gets a thumbs-up from me.

El Grande - Decennial (10 year) Edition (Expansions Included)   (View Game)
   Brett
El Grande is a very strategic game about exerting influence. When I first played this game almost 10 years ago, I fell in love with it. Since that first play, it has sat quite comfortably in my top 10 favorite games. Plenty of player interaction and difficult choices abound as you juggle a number of different things to reach the goal of being the most influential player in the game. At times you will bask in the glory of a stunning move and other times want to strangle an opponent who just pulled the rug right out from under you. If you like heavy strategy, then El Grande is for you!

What hasn't already been said about this wonderful game that has now stood the test of time and can already be considered a classic of the genre? I will point out the two things that I feel make this such a great addition to any gamer's collection: (1) it is FUN and (2) it works great for 3, 4 and 5 players. Just to reiterate that last point, while the game plays much differently depending on the number of players, it works well in all three scenarios. This is just a great, great game.

Maharaja   (View Game)
   Brett
Maharaja is an all around beautiful game. The components are top-notch, which range from colored glass stones to sturdy action discs and nice wooden houses. The board artwork is fantastic as well, adding additional enjoyment to the game. I enjoy chaos and trying to predict what my opponents might do. This game caters to those tastes, with plenty of depth for hardcore gamers, but fun mechanics that should please even casual players. The only drawback (which frankly, I don't consider a drawback) is that players who start off slowly will have a very difficult time catching back up to the leaders in this game, since the game rewards those who do well. I actually prefer game mechanics such as these which reward good play as opposed to penalizing it (like you might see in Power Grid). I highly recommend Maharaja and consider it to be one of my Top 5 games.

Ascending Empires   (View Game)
   Brett - http://columbiagaming.blogspot
This is currently my favorite game. It is the game that Risk wished it could be. The players maneuver around the galaxy, discovering new planets, harvesting resources and developing technology to advance, defend and even conquer other civilizations. The game is fun, especially if you like flicking things around. While some may not like the military aspects of the game, I think it is wonderful. The only thing I don't like about this game is its name. Everything else is great.
