California
From the Publisher...
Who doesn't dream of owning a large mansion in the sun-drenched hills of California?
But before you can furnish the house, the interior must be created. Just as you have completed furnishing the first rooms, your curious neighbors begin to drop by, some bearing housewarming gifts. A good thing too, because victory will go to the one with the most beautifully renovated house and the largest collection of gifts!

I was given this game as a gift and knew nothing about it beforehand. It has become one of my favorite games now. It plays well with two and four (haven't tried 3 or 5 yet). You have to decide when to get points from remodeling, furnishing, or guests. There is actually quite a bit of influence you have on your opponents. Do you take a coin to help build your cash flow - but lowers prices for the others? Do you store the one piece of furniture your opponent has been waiting for in your attic? Who will be the first one to claim that bonus tile? There are a few mini expansions that can be printed from online too! Great game! |
California is a tile-laying game that reminds me a bit of Alhambra, but with a less steep learning curve and a very "friendly" theme - interior decorating. It is a great way of introducing people to tile-laying games as it is relatively simple and plays fast - but it is also quite a satisfying experience. I particularly like the objectives that you can try to accomplish for points, since they add different motivations for players. |
