Birds, Bugs and Beans is a quick-paced, funny, noisemaking card game where players toss cards -- each of which features an animal -- into the middle of the game, looking for the birds, bugs and beans.

This Mini-Review by Mike Petty originally appeared in the June 29, 2004 newsletter:
R&R Games released this title last year. I picked up a copy for
my son and daughter, ages 4 and 5. The box claims the game is
for ages 6 and up, but since my kids play a lot of games, I figured
I'd give it a try. With a couple modifications, they enjoy it very
much.
The game is very similar to Slapjack. Instead of slapping jacks
when they show up, though, now players have to perform
actions based on four different card types. All players
simultaneously reveal the top card on their stack. When birds
show up, everyone has to "tweet". Crawling bugs require a slap
on the table and flying bugs call for a clap. If a bean shows up,
everyone has to "toot" by blowing with their tongues out. When
two or more of these cards come up at once, all actions have to
be carried out. It's up to the dealer to judge who did all required
actions first. Several other animal cards are in the deck as well
that do not require an action, so sometimes no action is carried
out. If even two or three of these cards requiring an action come
up at one time, though, it gets very confusing trying to determine
who did it first. Be sure an adult is the dealer!
When a player is first at doing the correct actions, he or she
takes all the cards that were played and adds them to his or her
stack of cards. As in slapjack, you can play until one player has
them all. A second way to play, which we prefer, is to play until
only two players are left. At that point, the one with the most
cards wins.
To simplify the game, we pulled out the flying bugs. Three
actions were enough of a challenge to keep our kids occupied!
On the other extreme, you can even allow players to create more
required actions based on the other animal cards and get totally
out of control. I can't speak to this variation, or even how the
game plays with a group of all adults. I will say my daughter (an
animal lover) can't get enough of it.
