Rollin' For Hits
Success in combat will depend on many factors. First the size of a ship's crew and its number of cannon determine how many dice can be rolled. The sails determine who fires first. Battle and Volley cards accumulated during the game can be played to affect the normal rules of combat.

When all cards are on the table, the first player to attack calls the target area of the ship (sails, cannon, crew or hull) and rolls the dice. A five or six on a die counts as a hit. Any damage is reflected by moving the appropriate marker down on the defending ship's ship mat. Battles can be harsh and crippled ships will find themselves drifting off to Pirate's Cove for repairs frequently!
