From the Publisher...

Players are recent immigrants to the newly populated island of Catan. Expand your colony through the building of settlements, roads, and villages by harvesting commodities from the land around you. Trade sheep, lumber, bricks and grain for a settlement, bricks and wood for a road, or try to complete other combinations for more advanced buildings, services and specials.

Trade with other players, or at local seaports to get resources you might lack. The first player to achieve 10 points from a combination of roads, settlements, and special cards wins.

Settlers is quite possibly the best board game ever created. It is very difficult to find anyone who doesn't love it after a couple of times playing it.

Stephen B
This is a good Eurogame starter. If you are looking to get your friends into a board game other then Monopoly. This is probably my favorite game of all time I had to buy this new edition because I had wore out my older one.

Greg Hodur
harvest your goods, move the robber, builld the longest road and own the largest army. a classic game of strategy, building and backstabbing. a group favorite.

Sean Hixenbaugh
Great gateway game! Excellent game to get New Gamers into real board gaming! I have yet to meet anyone who dislikes this game.

Mr Waiguoren
This is the second designer game I ever bought and has probably been played more than any other I have. A great way to introduce new people to gaming, and even more fun to play with experienced Catan players. Unlike some Euro games, there is plenty of player interaction. Trading and competing for the best spots adds a lot of fun to this classic game.

Paul
I bought this with Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride, and Bang!, but Settlers is definitely my family's favorite. There is a fair bit of luck involved in this game which evens the playing field when you are with new players. One thing i like most about the 2007 version is that the ports create a border for the hex tiles which helps keep the board together.

Ryan S.
Great Game! The variable board makes every game different. Also, the trading aspect can make turn a light hearted game to a cuthroat battle!

Dog
I played Settlers long before becoming aware of the variety of complex, modern board games... but SoC is as enjoyable as ever. Settlers is well-rounded, strategic, and social, and it's the most likely game beyond the department store shelf to be met with recognition and enthusiasm.

Shara_33
Who wants to settle? This is my favorite question! What a fun and dynamic family game! Each game is new because you set it up differently each time. It does take a little while to explain (thoroughly) to new players but it is so worth it! Place settlements strategically to earn resources based on the roll of the dice. Connect roads, purchase development cards and try to earn the most development points to win! I give this game 5 stars!

This is the other "gateway" game (besides Pandemic) that got me into real board games. I win a lot which means I usually incur an embargo pretty early on which definitely adds to the difficulty. If you like to interact with the players around you a lot, this is a good game to pick!

Jon
This is the game that started it all for me, that brought me past the world of Monopoly, Rummikub, and party games. Dice often mean randomness, but there is definitely strategy to this game - deciding where to place initial settlements and then expanding in the best way to build your empire. The game is excellently balanced so that you can usually do something with most hand combinations. If not, trading with the other players is what makes the game interactive. This will always be a classic and one of my favorites.

The classic gateway game. For experienced players, it may take a bit long for what it is, but it is great for introducing better games to less experienced players.

Mark P
A game that's easy to teach and is fun to play. There's a lot of randomness and luck involved but since there's plenty of player interaction, it doesn't feel so frustrating. Great gateway game.

Jon
Settlers was the first modern game I played and I love it. It has some strategic elements, but luck plays a big part in it also. It is a fun game to play for a relaxing night with friends and easy to teach new people. My parents loved it and enjoy playing when they visit.

Laura
Love this game. Can be challenging or simple!

Mitchell Rowekamp
A nice light gateway game. Trading with people can be frustrating at times, but any game with player interaction like this is going to have some frustration factor.

Michael Moore
An instant classic that will keep you coming back. A little difficult at first and helpful to have someone who knows it teach you how to play. It's a great game with so many layers of strategy and fun.

Greg Burbidge
The game that introduced euro games to me, and resulted in a closet full of games. This is still probably the most commonly played game in our collection and with good reason. You don't need the expansions to keep it interesting. It's perfect even by itself.

Josh Clemson - CABS
This is a great gateway game into Euro-gaming. Some say it's a Euro-version of Monopoly. While I wouldn't go that far, I find it to be a simple game with enough strategy to appease hardcore gamers, and enough luck to give the newer players a chance to have some fun.

Settlers was responsible for my (and a lot of other people's) re-entry into the boardgaming hobby. It is really quite innovative and provides an experience that is very different from the games of my childhood. I particularly like that fact that you have some control over the probability of getting certain ressources, while you can never be certain about it. I believe it is the lack of particular ressources that drives the game forward, since it motivates people to negotiate and trade with each other - and that is the key to the game's big success.

Settlers of Catan is really a modern classic that almost everyone has at least heard of. My favourite part of the game is actually the initial placement of settlements and roads, since that is where a lot of your strategy is carried out - and it is pure genius to allow the last placing player to place his second settlement right away to even out the battle for locations. I like that there is randomness, but that you have an influence on it, by choosing which territories you focus on.

Staysha
One of our very favorite games. This was our first Euro game and has remained our favorite. We almost always play with an expansion, usually cities and knights.

Timothy Barron
Settlers is an excellent gateway game to get friends into playing board games and it's also a great family game. I make sure to pull it out for a game every couple weeks when I can!

Matt K
I LOVE settlers of catan. This is the original game and it is lots of fun. Not too hard to learn, but with the handy almanac provided, the rules are always at hand. Can take around 1.5 hours to play. Prefer with 3 players, but 4 is fun too...just a little tighter for space on the board. Be careful how you set up the board, as if you do it totally random, it can result in some very poor producing areas of resources. Lots of fun--GREAT Game!

Ian Lai
A lot of people love catan, and I think that the rave and all of that is well deserved. I, for one, don't actually like this game though, and I'll try to explain why very succinctly. It's very easy to get ganged up by other players, making you feel extremely helpless. Also, it's luck based, so sometimes a winner is determined in one turn through lucky dice :( There are many things that are good about Catan, but I think that many newer games do the same mechanics, but better. The sheer frustration that sometimes comes out of this game is really what does it for me :(

Victor Garrison
Second favorite family game. Bought this 3 years ago, my daughter was 7 and son 11. My daughter beat me and her brother nearly every game for 2 years. A great gateway game for non-gamers. Certainly hooked me into boardgames as a hobby.
